Gene blinked up at Eric.

“M’s waiting for us,” Eric reminded, “if he’s not already firing up the jet to get the heck out of Dodge after all of that.”

All of what?

Gene shook his head, thoughts blurring together. Had he, Gene Stinson, stood up to a demon from Hell? He thought so, but everything seemed to be running together like a muddy river in his mind.

M?

The letter stuck in his mind, and Gene thought he should know why. He’d been leading them somewhere… out of the destroyed mountain complex, down to the airfield in the valley below, but something had happened. He couldn’t seem to remember what that something had been.

He looked around at the others, puzzled. They looked back at him, eyes wide and faces pale. Bits and pieces of recollection locked into place. They had to get to M, who waited for them at the airfield. M would fly them to Jerusalem. They would meet the others there.

That wasn’t all, though. Something had happened—something terrible. People had died, but he couldn’t remember how.

His thoughts shifted again, and the imperative clicked: they had to go. M was waiting for them.

Gene started to get up and felt something heavy in his right hand. He looked down to find his bible gripped tight, its cover curled at the corners and the pages blackened at the edges. He saw fire. In his mind’s eye, he saw red, glowing eyes.

The bible fell from his hand. Eric bent over and picked it up.

“I’d hold on to this, if I were you,” Eric said as he placed the book in Gene’s backpack.

“Yeah… I think I will,” Gene said.

He gazed into Eric’s eyes for a moment, looking for a memory of what had taken place. Behind the half-circle of the others standing around him, he saw smoke rising from blackened mounds on the scorched earth, and he turned quickly away from them.

“Let’s go,” he said.
